In the movie, Ground Hog Day, Phil Conners lives the same day over and over, and goes through a full spectrum of human behavior and emotions: selfishness, pride, disgust, anger, loathing, anxiety, fear, terror, despair, slothfulness, lust, indulgence, repentance, hope, self sacrifice, humility, love.
At one point when confronted with an impassable blizzard, Phil, the weather man, yells, "I MAKE THE WEATHER!" As writers or illustrators, we too might make the weather. We create lives, homes, characters, and snargy problems for them to overcome. We might decide for our characters to go to the laundromat, to twirl their umbrella, or to be eaten alive.
One day I saw a fisherman working on a tug boat. "Man, that guy is a salty old dog," I said. Now, he didn't wrong me or anything, but I turned him into a dog. What can I say? I had to.

I LOVE salty old dog! I want to hear all his fishing stories. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Kjersten, I had a show of some of my art at a Bainbridge Island gallery, and the Salty Dog painting was in the show. A lady said to me, "That salty dog looks a lot like a friend of mine who works on boats." I said, "Oh yeah, does he happen to be working on a tug boat in Port Townsend?" And she said, "Yes, how did you know?" Turns out she recognized her salty friend from my painting of him as a dog.
HA! love it. Hilarious, pops.
hello there, have just discovered your blog and your work from over at tara's. love what you did with the "old dog", he looks like he would love to share a sea tale or two. i love looking at the real world through "illustrators" glasses, some of my folks think i am a bit quirky for i see "things" they dont.
Thanks Ruthie, I know what you mean. A lot of people do not see the way artists see, perhaps because they have not taken the time. I think that artists and scientists have found it vital to observe om depth. Georgia O'Keefe said, "No one really sees a flower because it takes time the way it takes time to have a friend".
Hi richard - thank u so for ur lovely comments, means a great deal. love o'keefe's words - imagine what a world this would b if more folks slowed down to "see".
Man no new posts for awhile. What are you building a deck or something?
I wish I *could* make the weather - would wish for more rain inbetween a bit hotter sun. My veggies would certainly be appreciative.
